Camera Obscura in Ohio and Pennsylvania
After a massively successful jaunt to the USA and 6 shows at the world-renowned ‘South by South West’ showcase in Austin Texas, Camera Obscura’s star is very much in ascendance. They recently played live on my BBC Radio Scotland show and were absolutely superb. Their confidence, vitality, songwriting and musicianship increase in quality as they continue their idiosyncratic career, seemingly growing in popularity with every release – especially in the USA and mainland Europe. Having signed to the amazing 4AD label, home to legends such as Pixies, Breeders, Throwing Muses, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance and many more, they’re out playing songs from their new ‘My Maudlin Career’ LP which is up there with their best work so far. This is heartfelt, bittersweet, cerebral pop music for people who want more from their hum-along tunes than Lady Gaga!

Alex Menzies is another of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. People often assume Scotland only pumps out indie and rock bands of quality, but our electronic music scene is also up there with the best of them. Alex is known as a techno DJ, but has his own label ‘Hum + Haw’ which releases all kinds of oddball hip-hop and experimental sounds as well as his own compositions. He’s also collaborated with an orchestra and has shown that techno has brain as well as brawn! I’ve seen him live too… and he blows the roof off the place! Laptops, keyboards, decks and effects can be used to create a maelstrom of amazing grooves, rhythms and off-kilter melodies. Check him out!
