Fresh from presenting BBC Scotland’s live coverage of T in the Park, Vic highlights Rustie in Amsterdam and Mungo’s Hi Fi in Mexico as the pick of this week’s Scottish gigs around the world for the week of July 13 – July 19, 2009
Rustie
Another genuinely inspired electronic musician and producer who, alongside Hudson Mohawke and others, is part of the ‘Lucky Me Collective‘ from central Scotland. His sound is a little harder and in many ways more focused than Hudson’s with more of an electro bite to the beats and basslines. Only in his early twenties, he’s already ripping up dance floors worldwide and making remixes for artists across the board. This is broken, reassembled, oddball instrumental music from Glasgow and is leading the world in new sounds and production techniques. If you have an inquisitive mind, a desire to dance and a love of strange, beguiling music… you’ll love Rustie!

Mungo’s Hi-Fi
Reggae and Scotland… hmmm, don’t really go together, do they? Until now that is. Alongside Edinburgh’s own ‘Big Toe’s Hi-Fi’, Glasgow has started a truly international sound-system with nods to Ska, Roots, Dub and electronic Reggae and an eye on the future with their interest in all things dubstep. Mungo’s Hi-Fi put out records on vinyl, CD’s and downloads and gig like crazy. They’re hugely respected within Scotland, and now across the globe in the reggae scene attracting old and new audiences to their skanking sounds. If you’re ever in the vicinity of a show, get down to see them for a guaranteed good time. Chant down babylon!
