You Have Been Watching…American Cousins
Watching Shane Meadow’s film Once Upon A Time in the Midlands the other night two thoughts struck me. The first is that Meadow’s is probably the most talented and diverse British film-maker of recent times (Dead Man’s Shoes and This is England being two of the best recent British movies) and could I justify claiming […]

Watch Czech Republic v Scotland Live with Expat Surfer
Once again, Scottish football fans in the US will be unable to watch an important international match on any American TV channel. I’ve written to the SFA several times, without reply, offering to broadcast games here on Dear Scotland, but fortunately you can now watch the game for free with Expat Surfer.

What We Miss: Memories from Euro 92
Two adult Scotsmen from Renfrew, on a pristine lawn, in the sunshine. One on his hands and knees being dry-humped, doggy-style, by the other. Behind them, valiantly ignoring this advert for the perils of alcohol, a choir of virginal schoolchildren. In a bar up the road, an empty litre-and-a-half bottle of Imperial vodka.

Indelible Ink : Alasdair Gray’s ‘Lanark’
How do I begin to sum up Alasdair Gray? Writer of fiction and non-fiction, painter, illustrator, dramatist, poet, cultural and political commentator, and even, as part of the ‘Ballad of the Books’ project, songwriter. Most people would be happy to have mastered one of these things. Alasdair Gray is not most people. And ‘Lanark’ is […]

Benni Hemm Hemm – ‘Retaliate’ Reviewed
Benni Hemm Hemm could be forgiven for thinking I’d taken against him, given he has lived in Edinburgh for something like two years now, has been playing and releasing pretty much as an Edinburgh artist, and plays exactly the kind of music I love and… I’ve written nothing about him at all. Not that I […]

Belle & Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub played Brooklyn last night: review, photos and video
A review of last night’s show in New York from BrooklynVegan. Photos by Amanda Hatfield, Words by Bill Pearis: “Belle & Sebastian have good luck with weather, actually,” remarked Stuart Murdoch three song’s into his band’s set on the Williamsburg Waterfront. “We’ve got God on our side.” Murdoch was being cheeky but we were all […]

You Have Been Watching…A Shot at Glory
I’m not a great fan of that widely used term ‘guilty pleasure’. I think if something gives you pleasure then feeling guilt over it can only cause you problems in the long run, as the history of Scotland has adequately shown. Who cares if you have a soft spot for late 70’s American disco, often […]
