It’s been a long time coming, but the South by Southwest Festival returns with live music in 2022 for the first time in three years. As a fan of Scottish music living in Austin I cannot wait. Full list of performing bands and Scottish Showcase details below:
For 20 years now, Scottish bands have been rolling into the capital of Texas for one of the biggest music industry events in the World. Bands like Idlewild, Franz Ferdinand and The Delgados were among the first to fly the flag at the Scottish Invasion parties of the early 2000s.
For a wee while there would be at least a dozen Scottish bands coming every year, and I fondly remember what might be the greatest Scottish gig ever featuring We Were Promised Jetpacks, Dananananaykroyd, Camera Obscura, The Proclaimers, Glasvegas and Primal Scream in 2009.
More recently, acts like Young Fathers and Chvrches have enjoyed that elusive “buzz band” status at the festival. This year, 11 acts will compete for the attention of the SXSW beehive. They are:
- Constant Follower
- Georgia Cécile
- Hamish Hawk
- KT Tunstall
- Rianne Downey
- Walt Disco
- We Were Promised Jetpacks
Six of those acts, encompassing indie rock, jazz, post-punk and acoustic-folk, will play the Wide Days Scottish showcase at the Swan Dive Patio venue on Thursday 17 March from 20.00-02.00 CST. Set times are:
- 8:20pm – Constant Follower
- 9:20pm – Georgia Cécile
- 10:20pm – Hamish Hawk
- 11:20pm – MEMES
- 00:20am – Walt Disco
- 01:20am – Parliamo
You can RSVP to the Scottish Showcase here.
In addition to the artists playing the official Scottish showcase, Gallus, Joesef, KT Tunstall, Rianne Downey and We Were Promised Jetpacks will also perform at the festival from 14-19 March.
