North Atlantic Oscillation in Europe
by Vic Galloway

One of my favourite new bands in recent years has been a duo turned trio who are based in Edinburgh and Glasgow, called North Atlantic Oscillation. They manage that hard task of marrying traditional rock instrumentation and electronics with inspired ease.

Live, the band use guitars, bass and drums but combine these with the laptops, sequences and computer-generated noise. In the studio… who knows? But it always sounds great.

If I was to compare them to others, I’d say they share the playful psychedelia of Flaming Lips, the heart-felt melodies and off-kilter time signatures of Radiohead, but managing to add their own character, lyrical flourishes and melodicism that make them stand out from the crowd.

This could be seen as modern progressive rock, but it’s way too pop-savvy to be put into that particular bracket. Their debut album ‘Grappling Hooks’ is a modern classic in my eyes, and I look forward to their second offering immensely. Catch them live in Holland this weekend and then across Europe, if you can.
