You Have Been Watching…The Near Room
Glasgow Noir. A surprisingly small genre. The city lends itself to the dark shadows, dodgy characters and indecipherable dialogue that noir demands. I don’t doubt that one of the reasons for Taggart’s long running success is down to the noirish qualities of the city of Glasgow.

Bullets, Bevvy, and Blades
“Bullet packages sent to Celtic boss,” reported the Sporting Life over the weekend. Last week a package addressed to Neil Lennon and Celtic player Niall McGinn was intercepted in Northern Ireland and turned over to the police, who are now investigating. On Saturday, congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Tucson, Arizona by an apparently deranged […]

Peenko’s Ones To Watch in 2011 #1 – FOUND
Chemikal Underground really do know their stuff. In recent years they’ve released some pretty amazing albums from the likes of the Phantom Band, De Rosa, Zoey Van Goey and Aidan Moffat. In 2011, they’re continuing this rich vein of form and in March of this year they will release FOUND’s third album ‘factorycraft’, it is […]

Scottish Bands at SXSW 2011 – Update
In about 12 weeks one of the biggest music gatherings of the year will happen in my new hometown of Austin, Texas. Thirty Pounds of Bone – ‘Method’ Reviewed
This is ‘alternative folk music’ clearly enough, if you want to call it something, but there are times when just for atmosphere that sounds like very much the wrong term to describe this album.

Vic Galloway’s 50 Scottish Artists to watch in 2011
I know, I know… I don’t things by halves! But the way I see it, if you’re going to turn people on to new music at the start of the year, you may as well give them a load of names and styles to investigate and explore. I can never limit my choices to only […]

You Have Been Watching…Comfort and Joy
I’ve looked briefly at Bill Forsyth’s Comfort and Joy in the past, but it is a film worth considering in greater detail. Also, I wanted to concentrate on a great Scottish film set around Christmas and they are few and far between, but Comfort and Joy is just that. This is his most ‘serious’ film, dealing with […]
