Vic picks Mogwai in Japan as the highlight of all the international Scottish gigs this week. Mogwai will be in Washington DC tonight before heading to the Summer Sonic festival in Tokyo and Osaka with The Vaselines and Teenage Fanclub. Vic sits in for Marc Riley all this week on BBC 6 Music. Details below.
The mighty post-rock machine that is Mogwai trucks on around the world to a devoted fan base that is continually increasing in size. As a live act, they’ve honed their craft over 14 years of touring and releasing records and are now a tight, dynamic unit that delivers the emotional punch that their simple, oblique melodies and crunching, metallic power needs.
The quiet bits are tender with an overwhelming eeriness and sense of unrest, while the noisy bits are ear-shattering and bowel-emptyingly heavy! This is instrumental rock music that takes in psychedelia, indie, metal and even ambient dance music to create an odd but affecting whole.
Their new LP ‘The Hawk is Howling’ is another piece of beauty as well. Go see them in Japan and clean out the cobwebs from your mind! www.myspace.com/mogwai
