Edinburgh’s Young Fathers will be taking their unique brand of Hip-Hop to Paris this week and Vic Galloway has chosen that as his Scottish international gig of the week. More below along with details of all the gigs abroad including Biffy Clyro, Simple Minds and Annie Stevenson.
Like many expat Scots, I find myself talking about Scotland a lot. And aside from the standard conversations about golf, whisky or Braveheart the subject of Scottish music frequently arises. In the past, when band names alone were not enough to impress certain people, I would end up making them a mixtape or cd.
This week is almost certainly the biggest week of the year for Scottish international gigs. 14 Scottish bands are heading to the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas and Vic will be there too. Here is his preview together with a listing of more than 80 Scottish gigs around the world this week:
As we’ve already mentioned on Dear Scotland, the Scots invented rap music, so it is no surprise that Edinburgh’s Young Fathers are widely tipped to be the next hip hop superstars to emerge from the UK. Young Fathers will be making their first appearance at SXSW in 2010.
Four weeks tomorrow the music world will descend on Austin, Texas for one of the largest and most influential festivals of the year. South by Southwest, also known as SXSW, (or “South By” if you want to be annoying) will feature 16 15 14 Scottish bands in 2010. And Dear Scotland will be there too:
Edinburgh’s Broken Records have a couple of interesting shows coming up. They’ll play a special Burns night show at King Tuts on the 24th and next weekend they’ll be at the Eurosonic Festival in Groningen. Vic has more on that gig and details on all the Scottish bands on tour this week:

The inventors of Cybraphon, (see video below), FOUND will thrill audiences at The Rose in Williamsburg on Thursday night, and at the Central Park Bandshell on Saturday. According to a report by an American academic earlier this year, Scotland invented rap music “ages ago”. And Edinburgh’s Young Fathers are continuing that tradition with some style. The group recently completed a UK tour with Simian Mobile Disco and they will rejoin SMD for 2 shows in Heidelberg and Berlin later this month.
