This month, Vic Galloway has more on Meursault who are currently on tour in Germany.  Other gigs this month include The Jetpacks in France, Veronica Falls in San Francisco, and Primal Scream in Argentina (thanks to another South American reader for pointing that out). Full details below:

One of Scotland’s finest singer-songwriters is Neil Pennycook, aka Meursault. He has a great turn of phrase, a knack for writing extremely, catchy tunes and most of all, an incredibly stirring and powerful singing voice. He can lull you with a whisper or belt it out at an unfeasibly loud volume.

I’ve seen Neil and the various different line-ups of Meursault many times before over the last few years. Sometimes he’s accompanied by laptop electronics, tribal drums and a banjo… sometimes it’s just him and an acoustic guitar. Such is the strength of the songs, it really doesn’t seem to matter.

Recently, he’s put together a full band with slightly more conventional instrumentation – guitar, bass, drums and strings. I’d imagine it will be in this guise that he will be touring Europe, playing songs from 2 excellent LP’s ”Pissing on bonfires, kissing with tongues’ and ‘All creatures will make merry’ alongside various EP’s and singles via the consistently ground-breaking Song, By Toad label, blog and podcast from Edinburgh.

There’s a new album in the offing too, so new songs will no doubt be showcased at these gigs. He has been categorised with the burgeoning alt-folk bracket, but that’s lazy… These are songs and arrangements that transcend genres and styles. On record, this is beautiful, poetic songwriting that’s full of melody and honesty. Live, it’s the same but possibly even more visceral and moving. Get along to Frankfurt, Berlin and Hannover and see Meursault, I implore you!
