Vic Galloway hosts our regular listing of all the upcoming Scottish international gigs. This month, Vic has the latest on Frightened Rabbit who are currently touring America with Death Cab for Cutie. Other gigs this month include Alex Smoke in New Zealand, Texas in France and Primal Scream in Taiwan. Full details below. Frightened Rabbit with Death Cab for Cutie by Vic Galloway Over the last few months, Selkirk’s finest Frightened Rabbit have been hiding away in various secret Scottish locations writing and preparing songs for their forthcoming 4th studio album, following up the hugely successful ‘The Winter of Mixed Drinks’. That album has seen them break through to even more people and establish themselves as Scotland’s next big, global, musical export. Not only is the album hotly anticipated by their loyal fanbase, but it will be their first release on a major label. Now the stakes are higher than ever. It may have been the influence of their now label-mates Death Cab For Cutie that their deal is with Atlantic Records. They’ve toured with the band before in the UK and obviously bonded with them. Originally, Death Cab had the band’s second album ‘Midnight Organ Fight’ on repeat in their tourbus and were totally blown away by the honesty and sincerity of the lyrics and tunes. They invited them on tour as their new favourite band, and the love seems to be growing. Frightened Rabbit are a pretty decent draw across the USA now as the blogosphere, and increasingly the more mainstream media, praises them to the highest heavens. What is important is this is a band that truly connects with people – old and young, Scottish and international – with songs that deal with the personal, heartfelt day-to-day highs and lows of simply being alive. Scott Hutchison writes about matters of the heart in a succinct, down-to-earth and poetic way. He’s not afraid to bare his soul, and audiences completely lap it up. You could say this tour may be Frabbit’s last before they move into the big league themselves. The billing is perfect. These are both great bands, and Death Cab fans will almost certainly take to the Selkirk boys. Hence they look to increase their burgeoning popularity in the USA, as they play in arenas and large halls across the country, (including a show at the legendary Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado), with high production values and immaculate sound. Gone are the raw, scruffy, lo-fi shows of years ago, and oddly enough this leap forward really suits them. The last time I saw Frightened Rabbit play the Glasgow Barrowlands, I realised how they have the serious potential to play arenas and stadiums in their own right. The new album will have to wait for another month or so until they get this mammoth trawl across America done. It will no doubt do them no harm at all, and will of course be a total blast! http://frightenedrabbit.com/Vic
