It’s a busy time for Scottish bands touring internationally right now. SXSW is just around the corner  and in the next few weeks The Twilight Sad head to the US, Simple Minds are in Europe and Hudson Mohawke is in Australia. Today, Vic has more on Django Django in Ireland and the full listing below:

I’ve been banging on about this band for a good few years now. They first came to my attention when loosely based in Edinburgh, before moving to London to seek their fortunes… Hey presto! It’s starting to work for them and deservedly so. I’m glad the rest of the world is slowly discovering them and I’m delighted their hugely-anticipated debut album has finally seen the light of day after some great demos and singles. It’s been a long gestation time though!

In many ways, the LP is like a series of singles in the way most debut albums should be… packed tight with a band’s first explosive and exploratory collaborative efforts, and the pure joy of making music together.

As a big fan and friend of The Beta Band and The Aliens, it was of some interest to know Dave McLean, brother of John, is a drummer and producer in the band. It’s also clear to see the influence they’ve drawn from the aforementioned psychedelic siblings. Django Django pull in many disparate influences and blend them effortlessly. There’s some 50′s rock’n'roll and surf twang in there, 60′s beat and garage, some 70′s blues-rock a la Canned Heat, some percussive afro elements and contemporary electronica all vying for your attention.

It’s a bizarre melting pot, but one that works brilliantly and never gets in the way of a good song and melody. The album is excellent and all those positive reviews are actually telling the truth for once.

I’ve caught them live on many occasions and know they are firing on all cylinders now, so get along to see them on tour in Dublin next week for a blissful, electro-psyche-pop experience!
