We Were Promised Jetpacks in Austin, Texas by Vic Galloway
4 school friends from Edinburgh formed a band and tried their luck. Sounds familiar? Well, this particular quartet had the raw emotion, the inspiration and the chops to take things a little further.
After a tentative start and gigs around the usual central belt toilet circuit, Jetpacks fortunately signed with Fatcat Records and released their excellent debut album ‘These Four Walls’, alongside releases from stable-mates and real-life mates Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad. Since then, the label put them on tour almost constantly, building a significant following in the UK, Europe and most significantly in the USA, where they were offered arena show supports to none other than Emo-giants Jimmy Eat World.
With the blogosphere going crazy over them, college and indie radio playing their tunes and a growing profile elsewhere in the media and at grassroots, the arrival of their new album ‘In the pit of the stomach’ is hotly anticipated to say the least. This new set of songs is darker, heavier and more obtuse than the previous album, without forsaking their trademark anthemic melodies and visceral lyrics. They put on a raw, emotive, no-nonsense rock show nowadays with the guitars set to stun and the volumes turned up way past ‘eleven’!
We Were Promised Jetpacks are a fearsome prospect and will no doubt rock the arse off the frankly awesome ‘Fun Fun Fun Fest’ this month. I was at FFF Fest last year and it was absolutely magic. Sadly I can’t make it in 2011, so say hello to the Jetpacks boys from me if you’re lucky enough to have a ticket for the weekend.
