For the week of July 6 – July 12, 2009.
Calvin Harris in Ireland
As well as most of the acts that I mention here, I supported Calvin right from the start as he launched his ever-so-slightly-tongue-in-cheek club anthems on the unsuspecting public. Initially fusing elements of fellow-Scot Mylo with bits of Prince and LCD Soundsystem, his tunes became a staple of nights across the world with anthems such as ‘Acceptable in the 80’s’ and ‘Girls’ – love them or hate them, they’re about the catchiest ditties around. As a result, his debut LP ‘I created disco’ was a massive success and the world wanted more. Hitting back with ‘I’m not alone’ he not only silenced critics, but scored his second #1 single in the UK (the first being a collaboration with Dizzee Rascal – ‘Dance Wiv Me’) with a 90’s trance-inflected sound. A new single and album are forthcoming, and world-domination approaches… oh, and he’s a nice fellow as well!

Hudson Mohawke in Ireland
Part of the Edinburgh and Glasgow based ‘Lucky Me Collective’ of producers, musicians, MC’s and beat-makers, Hudson Mohawke is probably the fore-runner and (he’ll hate me for saying this) star of Scotland’s new future-beats scene. He’s now highly in demand for his live sets and remixes, as well as being chased by US rappers for his production. Imagine hip-hop, grime, crunk, electronica, trip-hop and booty-shaking funk all put into a mincer then spat out the other side! It’s wonky, disorientating, utterly compelling… and it also sounds like nothing else just now. Having recently signed to the ground-breaking Warp Records, in the world of electronic music Glasgow’s hippest son is already the name to drop!
